What's New in Music 2/12/08

Check out more music articles at Listen In.

Another week, another Tuesday, another flurry of new music. As new albums drop, this column will do its best to track the notable releases so you don't have to. Only new material is included in this list; compilations, re-releases, live albums and remixes will generally not be covered.

  • Secret and Whisper - Great White Whale
  • Where pop-punk meets post-hardcore. Fans of Brand New and Fall Out Boy, or anyone who wonders what Paramore would sound like with a male lead singer would do well to click above.

  • Simple Plan - Simple Plan
  • Until I began compiling this article I didn't even know Simple Plan was still around. Ignorance is bliss.

  • British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
  • The British indie-rock four-piece drops its third studio album. At times filled with ambient constructions, at others catchy as hell. Occasionally both at once.

  • Speakeasy - All Your Favorite Songs
  • Inventive, for Top 40 listeners and MTV viewers. Mildly annoying for everyone else.

In a pretty weak week, British Sea Power easily dominates. If you don't see anything you like this week, keep checking back. You'll never know what might catch you fancy while checking out What's New.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Almost forgot to put this up today.

That British Sea Power record is kind of addictive.

Even cooler when their first album is called The Decline of as in The Decline of British Sea Power.

I've been waiting for this new British Sea Power album since their last album kicked so much ass :-)

Oh, of course. Though they did "clean" up their sound a bit on their second album to be a tad more poppy. However, listening to the current album, they have struck a nice balance and it rocks fully.

Nice way of putting it, Adam.

Thanks for posting this Eric. I'd never heard of British Sea Power, but I followed the link you included and really like their sound.

I should also mention this was the release date for the 25th Anniversary edition of Michael Jackon's Thriller.
