Killers' New Album Nothing to Fuss Over

advertisement

The Killers' major label debut, 2004's Hot Fuss was easily one of my favorite records to come out that year. It was stacked front to back with straightforward rock songs with danceable beats and yet it was supported by sometimes hilariously clever, sometimes plaintively heartfelt lyrics. It was everything a first album should be in that genre and it left high hopes for their eventual follow up.

Their latest release, Sam's Town exemplifies the rarity of lightning ever striking twice.

It is a lukewarm record that is a ton of fun to listen to, but falls far short of the strength in meaning and simple humanity that the Killers are capable of. Lyrically Sam's Town offers nothing but poppy hooks and forced rhymes jammed one after the other. Thirteen tracks of singalong with no substance to back them up. To make matters worse, Brandon Flowers shows zero vocal range on the disc and rarely brings a different melody or cadence to each successive song. Oftentimes it seems that the vocal tracks to the songs on the album sound completely interchangeable.

This dearth of depth is especially disappointing given the vast musical strides the group has made in the past two years. Instrumentally, the Killers' second album is exactly where it should be - it is a direct evolution from where they were on Hot Fuss. The band is enormous; power-chorded and powerful with a crushing beat so commanding and driving that it would make a tone-deaf 94 year-old grandmother jump out of her wheelchair and pound her feat to the rhythm. They have blossomed from garage rock to arena - a move that some may not like but that makes perfect sense for the foursome to make.

And yet, even though they have built a colossus of sound they don't seem to know how to fully harness it. Riffs and changes which seem original on the first few tracks begin to wear thin as they are reused in the middle of the record and completely dry up when they are still being used at the end. In trying to capture the energy of former hits "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" the Killers seem to have completely forgotten the originality and soul of "Smile Like You Mean It" or "Everything Will Be Alright."

At the end of the day, Sam's Town is not an exceptionally horrible album, but it is an exceptionally forgettable album. Instead of trying to branch out in new directions, or even fine-tuning what they built in 2004
the band has attempted growth by trying to mimic and then amplify only the most radio friendly parts of their debut. Sadly, the road to rock stardom is littered with bands that have made that same mistake.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Though I'm fairly disappointed with this record, I can't deny its fun factor and if I'm ever at a party and this comes on, much like when "Livin' on a Prayer" comes on just before last call at a crowded bar, I'll be right there singing along.

I was a bit disapppointed myself

They appear (IMHO) to be headed towards 'stadium rock' with a lot of these pieces, which is a shame after their excellent debut.

great review by the way

Disappointed? I'm absolutely thrilled with the new album. I pre-ordered it on iTunes a month before it came out and counted down the days. That's the kind of anticipation that can easily lead to disappointment, even with a good album. I'm happy to report that I am even more pleased with this album than the first. It's got the same great Killers sound, only much bigger. I can't stop listening to it.

I kind of agree with Kirk. I think it's rather good too, just different to Hot Fuss. Love the 80s feel to it.

The music does have the same sound, which I loved. The lyrics, however, turned vapid to the point that they brought me out of a song every time I started getting into it.

I have to agree with Kirk and David. I haven't even finished listening to "Sam's Town" my requisite ten times (joke) and I'm loving it. I like that it's different from "Hot Fuss."

I'm loving it. I also pre-ordered it on iTunes (listened to When You Were Young 140 times before the album was released). It's one of the best albums I've bought all year (and this has been a good year for music). I love the music and the singing. I've already listened to it over 40 times and I still love it.
Why does everyone always complain about music not being new and innovative? All that should matter is whether or not you enjoy listening to it. And I'm loving Sam's Town.
